Statement Recognizing the One Year Anniversary of the Mass Shooting in El Paso, Texas

Today we remember the twenty-three lives lost to an act of domestic terrorism. As a community, we continue to grieve for the loss of each life, while striving to heal from the trauma of this racially motivated act of violence.

Throughout its history, El Paso has been on the front lines of the structural violence that continues to adversely impact the Latinx community. Yet, in the face of adversity, the people of El Paso have shown strength and resilience in their enduring unity against racism and hatred.

While the pain of this act of violence will long persist in our community, it will not silence our demands for an end to the hatred and racism that permeates through our society. Together, we will continue to build a new generation of Latinx leaders who will amplify the voices of our community in institutions that have traditionally oppressed and marginalized our people. In doing so, we will persist in our efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
